Writeup from MB 112:
Northwest Africa 15989 (NWA 15989) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2023 Classification: Enstatite chondrite (EL4) History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Nigeria. Physical characteristics: Brownish rock lacking fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite is composed of well defined, mostly flattend, separated chondrules (mean diameter about 500 µm) in a fine-grained mineral matrix. Enstatite is the only silicate present in chondrules and matrix; no plagioclase was detected. Opaque phases are Si-bearing kamacite, schreibersite, troilite, and daubréelite. Geochemistry: enstatite: Fs0.6±0.3Wo0.3±0.1 (Fs0.2-1.3Wo0.1-0.6, n=12); kamacite: Ni=6.1±0.04, Si=0.45±0.01, Co=0.33±0.01, n=5; troilite: Cr=0.64±0.03, Ti=0.23±0.01, n=3; daubréelite: Mn=1.86±0.02, n=3 (all wt%) Classification: Enstatite chondrite (EL4a). EL designation based on silica content in kamacite. ELa subgroup based on Cr contents in troilite, Ni contents in kamacite, and presence of daubréelite (Weyrauch et al., 2017). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
