Northwest Africa 16122 (NWA 16122)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2016

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5)

History: Purchased in 2016 by Dean Bessey from a mineral dealer in Erfoud, Morocco

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Equilibrated ordinary chondrite with clearly visible chondrules and chondrule fragments. Secondary feldspar grains are mostly <50 µm. High amounts of Fe-Ni metal, almost completely oxidized by terrestrial weathering.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean olivine composition: Fa18.5±0.3 (Fa18.1-18.8; n=11); mean low-Ca pyroxene composition: Fs16.5±0.4 Wo1.1±0.1 (Fs15.7-17.2Wox0.9-1.4; n=10).

Classification: H chondrite based on mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 5 due to the equilibrated state of olivine and pyroxene and grain size of secondary plagioclase.
