Northwest Africa 16135 (NWA 16135)

Classification: Ureilite

History: Reportedly found on November 2022 in northern Mali by a group of Saharawi meteorite hunters and later purchased in Mauritania by Mohamed Ali Loud.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Coarse-grained ultramafic rock, consisting of olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, and Ca-rich pyroxene with sizes up to several mm. Reverse zoning of olivine grains can be observed. Metal mainly occurs along grain boundaries.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean composition of olivine cores: Fa12.4±0.4 (Fa11.2-12.7; Fe/Mn (at.): 20.8; n=11. The mean concentration (wt%) of CaO and Cr2O3 in olivine is 0.30 and 0.54, respectively. Reduction zones in olivine: Fa6.3±1.3 (Fa5.4-7.1; n=2); Fe/Mn (at.): 10. Mean composition of low-Ca pyroxene: Fs10.9±0.2Wo4.7±0.2 (Fs10.6-11.2Wo4.3-5.3); n=12. Mean composition of Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs6.6±0.3Wo35.9±0.5 (Fs6.1-7.2Wo35.3-36.7); n=13.

Classification: Ureilite, based on texture, mineral chemistry, and typical reduction features in olivine.
