Northwest Africa 16165 (NWA 16165)

Purchased: 2023 Apr

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Coarse-grained unbrecciated basalt with interspersed finer grained metamorphic regions often displaying 120 degree grain boundaries between adjoining crystals. Main minerals are exsolved pyroxene and calcic plagioclase grains measuring up to 1 mm in coarse- and up to 300 µm in fine-grained lithologies. Minor phases include silica, chromite, ilmenite, zircon, and FeS. No metallic iron detected.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host to exsolution lamellae: Fs56.9±0.2Wo5.9±0.1 (Fs56.5-57.1Wo5.8-6.0, FeO/MnO=28-30, n=7); Ca-pyroxene exsolution lamellae: Fs28.2±0.2Wo41.3±0.2 (Fs27.9-28.5Wo41.1-41.7, FeO/MnO=28-33, n=7); calcic plagioclase: An89.7±1.9 (An85.2-91.1, n=7).
