Northwest Africa 16266 (NWA 16266)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H6)

History: Purchased by Mark Zalcik from Dean Bessey via eBay; originally purchased from a Moroccan dealer in Erfound in 2018.

Petrography: (C. Herd, UAb) Optical and microprobe examination of a polished thin section shows a brecciated texture of poorly defined chondrules, crosscut by numerous shock veins. Metal is mostly oxidized, some oxidation of sulfide has occured, and iron oxide veins are present. Olivine shows weak mosaicism and planar fractures.

Geochemistry: (C. Herd, A. Locock, and D. Poon-Matsune, UAb) Data obtained by EMP examination of carbon-coated thin section: Olivine Fa18.3±1.4 (n=39); Low-Ca Pyroxene Fs16.4±1.1Wo1.1±0.4 (n=20).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite, H6 breccia

Specimens: Type specimen of 79.0 g, including polished thin section, at UAb. Main mass with M. Zalcik.
