Gao, Mali

Find: 2022 Jun

Classification: Lunar (anorthositic troctolite melt breccia)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Achondritic clast-rich melt breccia, consisting of lithic clasts (up to several cm) and mineral fragments (plagioclase, olivine) set in a fine-grained and vesicular crystallized melt. The latter is dominated by plagioclase, with smaller amounts of olivine. One troctolite clast was found in the investigated thin section, consisting of ~85 vol% plagioclase and ~15 vol% olivine. No pyroxene was found. Accessories are Cr-Al-spinel and tiny grains of metal with 4-42 wt% Ni.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Olivine Fa21.6±2.6 (Fa15.6-25.4); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 89; n=12. Plagioclase An97.2±1.1 Or0.1±0.1 (An95.2-98.9 Or0.0-0.4); n=12.

Classification: Lunar anorthositic troctolite melt breccia, based on Fe/Mn values in olivine, high An values in plagioclase, and predominance of plagioclase and olivine.
