Northwest Africa 16322 (NWA 16322)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2023 Sept

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Temara, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Grayish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is composed of up to 2 mm sized elongated pyroxenes, up to 1.5 mm sized partly euhedral olivine crystals, and interstital up to to 800 µm lath-shaped maskelynite grains. Pyroxenes display patchy compositional zoning; olivines mostly show magmatic zoning with Mg-rich cores and Fe-rich rims and contain abundant magmatic inclusions. Minor phases include chromite, ilmenite, troilite, and FeNiS. Contains abundant glassy to finely recrystallized shock melt veins and pocket.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa40.5±9.4 (Fa28.5-56.1, FeO/MnO=48±2, n=10); pyroxene: Fs29.7±8.1Wo10.0±6.7? (Fs24.5-45.7Wo4.4-26.8, FeO/MnO=28±2, n=10); maskelynite (An49.0-54.4Ab43.2-47.7Or2.3-3.1, n=10)
