Northwest Africa 16413 (NWA 16413)

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Chondrules, chondrule fragments, and CAIs are embedded in a fine-grained black matrix (about 30 vol% matrix). The vast majority of chondrules belong to chemical type I. Chondrule sizes mostly between 50 and 300 µm.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Random measurements of olivine grains revealed Fa14.6±23.4 (Fa0.7-71.5); n=15. Random measurements of low-Ca pyroxene grains revealed Fs2.0±1.6Wo1.3±0.6 (Fs0.9-6.7Wo0.9-2.7; n=15).

Classification: CO chondrite based on CAI occurrence, small chondrule size, chondrule-matrix ratio, and mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 3 based on the chemical variation of olivine and pyroxene. Petrologic subtype (<3.5) based on the PMD of Fa values (~160).

Specimens: The weight of the largest piece is 46.2 g.
