Northwest Africa 16398 (NWA 16398)

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, melt breccia)

History: Reportedly this stone was found in Mauritania.

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Clast-rich melt rock, consisting of basalt clasts with sizes up to several mm and related debris (pyroxene and plagioclase fragments), embedded in a crystallized vesicular melt. The entire rock is thermally recrystallized, consisting of subgrains with sizes mostly < 50 µm. Most pyroxene grains show a patchy chemical zoning. Accessories are chromium spinel, ilmenite, a silica polymorph, and troilite.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean pyroxene composition: Fs42.2±6.5Wo7.8±4.0 (Fs33.2-51.5Wo2.2-12.9); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 33.2; n=13. Mean plagioclase composition: An91.9±1.6Or0.1±0.1 (An89.9-94.4Or0.0-0.4); n=11.

Classification: Eucrite (clast-rich melt rock), based on texture and mineral chemistry.
