Writeup from MB 113:

El Milhas 006        25°19’32’’N, 5°46’21’’W

Tiris Zemmour, Mauritania

Purchased: 2023 Mar

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVred3)

History: Reportedly found in October 2021 in the El Milhas DCA, Mauritania

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Chondrules, CAIs and AOAs are embedded in a dark fine-grained matrix. Most chondrules have apparent diameters between 0.3 and 1 mm, some up to 1.6 mm. Type II chondrules are rare. Opaque minerals are metal and Ni-poor sulfides.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Mean composition of olivine: Fa4.7±2.8 (Fa1.0-9.0); n=13. Mean composition of low-Ca pyroxene: Fs1.5±0.6 Wo1.9±1.4 (Fs0.7-2.5 Wo0.5-3.9); n=10. Mean Ni concentration in sulfides: 0.4 wt%; n=11. Ni concentration in metal: 61.8 wt%; n=11.

Classification: CV chondrite based on CAI and AOA occurrence, apparent sizes of chondrules, and mineral chemistry. Petrologic type 3 based on the chemical variation of olivine and pyroxene. The low Ni content of sulfides is typical of the reduced subgroup (CVred; Gattacceca et al.,2020).
