Boutel Fil (b)        12°34’58.2’’N, 14°56’45.6’’E

Chari-Baguirmi, Chad

Find: 2023

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5, melt breccia)

History: The rock was found while searching for meteorites in the Boutel Fil strewn field and recognized as looking strikingly different from the fresh LL6 Boutel Fil chondrite individuals.

Physical characteristics: Brownish rock partly covered with fusion crust.

Petrography: Chondritic melt breccia composed of type H5 regions in abundant melt rock matrix. H5 regions contain partly flattened separated chondrules (mean diameter about 0.3 mm) and are crosscut by thin shock melt veins. Secondary plagioclase has a grain size of about 25 µm. Melt rock matrix is mostly recrystallized with fine- and coarse-grained regions, the latter containing up to 1 mm sized olivine dendrites. Characteristic FeNi metal and sulfide spherules are abundant.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa18.1±0.2 (Fa17.8-18.3, FeO/MnO=36±3, n=7); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs16.1±0.3Wo1.5±0.2 (Fs15.7-16.6Wo1.3-2.0, FeO/MnO=22±1, n=7)

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (H5-melt breccia). The texture is clearly distinct from the nearby Djermaia H3-6 chondrite.
