Northwest Africa 16439 (NWA 16439)

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Mafic-rich igneous rock, dominated by isometric low-Ca pyroxene grains up to 2 mm with small amounts of interstitial plagioclase (~15 vol%) and Ca-rich pyroxene. Low-Ca-pyroxene shows chemical zoning with Mg-rich cores and Fe-Ca-rich rims with thin exsolution lamellae (<1 µm thickness). Plagioclase has been completely shock-transformed to maskelynite. Shock melt pockets are present, showing a swirly pattern of intermingled melts of pyroxene and plagioclase. Accessories are ilmenite, Cr-spinel, and FeS.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene: Fs28.8±8.7 Wo7.1±4.1 (Fs20.2-41.3Wo2.2-11.9); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 34.9; n=18. Ca-rich pyroxene: Fs25.3±2.0Wo33.6±0.7 (Fs24.2-29.4Wo33.0-35.0); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 35.4; n=6. Plagioclase (maskelynite) An53.3±1.0Or0.8±0.3 (An51.3-54.4Or0.3-1.3); n=13. Chromium spinel (at.) Cr/(Cr+Al) = 0.88-0.90; Mg/(Mg+Fe) = 0.16-0.20; TiO2 = 0.7-1.1 wt%; n=7.
