Northwest Africa 16440 (NWA 16440)

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Ultramafic igneous rock. Point counting on a PTS image (1.0 cm2; n = 302) revealed 27 vol% olivine (up to ~1.5 mm), 65 vol% pyroxene (up to ~1 mm), and 8 vol% interstitial plagioclase. Pyroxene crystals show igneous zoning with slightly Fe-enriched rims with thin exsolution lamellae (< 1 µm thickness). Plagioclase has been completely shock-transformed to maskelynite. Accessories are ilmenite, Cr-Ti-spinel, merrillite, and small amounts of FeS.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Pyroxene: Fs29.2±2.5 Wo9.6±1.6 (Fs27.1-33.5 Wo6.5-12-2); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 35.4; n=14. Olivine: Fa41.7±1.4 (Fa40.2-43.8); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 54.2; n=12. Plagioclase (maskelynite) An53.0±1.7 Or0.8±0.5 (An50.1-56.1 Or0.0-1.7); n=12. Cr-Ti-spinel (at.): Cr/(Cr+Al) = 0.77-0.81; Mg/(Mg+Fe) = 0.07-0.08; TiO2 = 12.6-13.7 wt%; n=5.

Classification: Martian (Shergottite, ultramafic), based on texture, modal composition, and mineral chemistry.
