Northwest Africa 16444 (NWA 16444)

Mali

Purchased: 2023 Jun

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in June 2023 from a Malian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS, and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Small well-defined, unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 240±150 µm, N = 26), accompanied by small mineral fragments and small CAI, are set in a fine-grained matrix (~15 vol.%, deep red-brown in thin section) containing kamacite, taenite, Cr-poor magnetite and troilite plus minor secondary Fe oxide and Ca sulfate. Phases identified in CAI include gehlenite, Al-Ti-diopside, spinel and perovskite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa28.1±26.7, range Fa0.3-70.2, N = 5; Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.04-0.27 wt.%, mean 0.18±0.08 wt.%, N = 6), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs2.3±2.4Wo2.0±1.9, range Fs1.0-5.1Wo0.7-4.1, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs6.4Wo8.9), Al-diopside (Fs1.1Wo45..8, Al2O3 8.5 wt.%; Fs0.4Wo51.5, Al2O3 3.8 wt.%; N = 2), plagioclase in chondrule (An93.8Or0.0), magnetite (Cr2O3 0.75-0.76 wt.%, N = 2).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 30.1 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
