Northwest Africa 16481 (NWA 16481)

Purchased: October, 2023

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a Moroccan dealer at the mineral fair in Munich, Germany.

Physical characteristics: Dark grayish rock lacking fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite shows a gabbroic texture and is predominantly composed of up to 1 mm sized partly euhedral olivine, pyroxene showing patchy compositional zoning plus interstitial maskelynite. Olivine often contains magmatic inclusions. Minor phases include chromite, ilmenite, and troilite. The meteorite is highly shocked and contains finely recrystallized shock melt veins and pockets.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa28.4±0.2??(Fa28.0-28.6, FeO/MnO=43±2, n=7); pyroxene: Fs19.5±4.7Wo20.6±12.3??(Fs14.1-24.5Wo7.1-35.3, FeO/MnO=24±2, n=7); maskelynite (An36.8-51.5Ab47.2-57.4Or1.3-5.9, n=7)
