Northwest Africa 16462 (NWA 16462)

Purchased: 2023 Jun

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CV3)

History: Purchased in June 2023 by Chalom Malka from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Twenty slightly weathered pieces with dark brown fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is comprised of well-defined chondrules (Av. ~0.9±0.4 mm, up to 3 mm, n=88) and refractory inclusions (up to ~2.5 mm) set within a fine-grained, brownish matrix. The sample is comprised of ~47 vol.% chondrules, ~3 vol.% refractory inclusions, and ~50 vol.% matrix. Accessory phases identified include Fe-Ni metal and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa6.9±13.0, range Fa0.4-45.4, n=25), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs1.3±0.3Wo2.9±2.0, range Fs1.1-2.0Wo1.0-5.7, n=11).

Classification: Carbonaceous Chondrite (CV3).

Specimens: 38.9 g type specimen at Cascadia, main mass with Chalom Malka.
