Writeup from MB 113:

Northwest Africa 16551 (NWA 16551)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: April 2022

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Purchased by Jason Whitcomb in April 2022 by a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Four stones with dark brown fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is an unequilibrated ordinary chondrite comprised of numerous well-defined chondrules (Av. ~0.9 mm, up to ~2 mm), and few lithic clasts (up to ~1 cm) and carbonaceous dark inclusions (up to ~2 mm), set within a mostly fine-grained, slightly opaque matrix containing accessory Fe-Ni metal, chromite, and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa20.6±11.2, range Fa0.6-48.8, n=40), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs7.7±5.7Wo1.1±0.9, range Fs1.4-18.3Wo0.3-3.3, n=17).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3). LL group estimated from magnetic susceptibility and average chondrule size.

Specimens: 22.5 g at Cascadia, main mass with the Whitcomb Meteorite Collection.
