Northwest Africa 16661 (NWA 16661)

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6)

History: Richard (Dick) Pugh purchased a single oriented whole stone in Casablanca, Morocco, on September 9, 2014, while attending the 77th annual meeting of the Meteoritical Society. He donated the meteorite to Cascadia on January 17, 2020.

Physical characteristics: Physical Characteristics: The sample consists of a single oriented stone. Remnants of weathered fusion crust cover approximately one-half of the stone’s exterior. The cut face is medium brownish-gray, crosscut by dark gray-to-black veins.

Petrography: (M. Hutson, F. Hollett-Brown, and A. Ruzicka, Cascadia): Chondrules are indistinct from coarse matrix in thin section. Much of the feldspathic material (~ 150 µm wide) is maskelynite. The thin section is crosscut by large opaque veins. BSE imaging shows that the veins widen into a layered dike in places, with a central clast-rich zone containing abundant tiny rounded metal-sulfide grains surrounded on either side by a clast-poor zone with fewer, but larger, rounded metal-sulfide grains. Opaque grains outside of the veins are intergrowths of metal and sulfide, having a "fizzed" texture. Silicates in the thin section are stained yellow; replacement of metal and sulfide is approximately 20%. Additional phases observed include chromite, merrillite, and chlorapatite.

Geochemistry: Olivine: Fa25.5±0.2, N=8; low-Ca pyroxene: Fs21.8±0.5Wo1.7±0.2, N=8; plagioclase feldspar: Ab85.3±0.9Or7.8±0.3An6.8±0.8, N=6

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L6) based on texture and mineral chemistry.

Specimens: Cascadia holds 93.9 g in three pieces, as well as a polished thin section.
