Tindouf, Algeria

Purchased: Nov 2021

Classification: Iron meteorite (IIAB)

History: Found near Bouagba, Algeria. Purchased by Habib-naji Naji in Nov 2021 from a dealer in Mauritania and subsequently acquired by Ziyao Wang in Feb 2022.

Physical characteristics: Consists of numerous (over 100) pieces, the largest up to 10 cm across. Most pieces are small. Exterior surfaces are light brown in color and the largest specimens have regmaglypts.

Petrography: (C. Herd, UAb) Etched surfaces have a felty appearance. No Widmanstatten pattern is observed. Alteration extends along fractures into the interior. Inclusions are present but were not characterized.

Geochemistry: ICP-MS data, using sample of North Chile (Filomena) as standard (C. Herd, P. Hill, and S. DuFrane UAb): Ni = 6.2, Co = 0.447 (both wt%); Ir = 2.1, Ga = 63, Ge = 226, Ru = 13.2, Re = 0.16, Os = 1.4, W = 2.1, Pt = 15.9, Cu = 172, Au = 0.6 (all μg/g).

Classification: (C. Herd and P. Hill, UAb): Iron, IIAB.

Specimens: Type specimen of 29.5 g at UAb. Main mass with Ziyao Wang.
