Oloitokitok        2°55.7’S, 37°30.5’E

Rift Valley, Kenya

Purchased: 2018 July 17

Classification: Iron meteorite (IIAB)

History: Found by some Maasai near Loitokitok town (Oloitokitok), Rift Valley Province. Purchased by Rongwei Ma on 17 July 2018 from a dealer in Kenya and subsequently acquired by Ziyao Wang in August 2018.

Physical characteristics: The single mass is slightly larger than fist-sized and is characterized by large regmaglypts on one side and smaller (cm-scale) regmaglypts on the other side. The surface is red-brown to black.

Petrography: (C. Herd, UAb): Optical and scanning electron microscopy examination of a ~1 × 3 cm cut surface reveals a 500 × 1500 μm inclusion consisting of daubreelite enclosed by troilite. The metallic portion of the sample examined is kamacite.

Geochemistry: ICP-MS data, using sample of North Chile (Filomena) as standard (C. Herd, P. Hill, and S. DuFrane UAb): Ni = 5.5, Co = 0.434 (both wt%); Ir = 6.4, Ga = 65, Ge = 174, As = 3.3, Ru = 19.6, Re = 0.5, Os = 3.4, W = 3.2, Pt = 23, Cu = 141 (all μg/g).

Classification: (C. Herd and P. Hill, UAb): Iron, IIAB. Metal analyzed consisted of kamacite only. Large sulfide and daubreelite inclusion is consistent with some evolved IIAB irons.

Specimens: Type specimen of 37.7 g at UAb. Main mass with Ziyao Wang.
