Löpönvaara        63°24.22068’N, 30°04.34256’E

Pohjois-Karjala, Finland

Find: 2017 Jul 10

Classification: Iron meteorite (ungrouped)

History: Following the discovery of the Lieksa meteorite from the same area, Pekka Kokko found a small, round, rust covered rock from Löpönvaara, Lieksa on July 10, 2017. The rock was identified as a phosphorus-rich iron meteorite at Geohouse in Turku, Finland.

Physical characteristics: Prior to sampling, the total mass of the rock was approximately 163.7 g. Only remnants of the original fusion crust can be observed as the meteorite is covered by a 1 mm thick layer of rust.

Petrography: The sample was examined by SEM and XRD, and it was discovered to consist of a mixture of 75% kamacite and 20% schreibersite, and <=0.1 wt% troilite. The rock is highly fractured and terrestrial oxidation products can be found within the cracks from the inside of the meteorite. Analyses were carried out at UTU by E. Mäkilä and L. Kotomaa).

Geochemistry: LA-ICP-MS data, with GSD glass as external standard. Main Kamacite: Fe 87.74 wt%, Ni 10.75 wt%, Co 0.42 wt%; Schreibersite: Fe 71.94 wt%, Ni 11.09 wt%, Co 0.35 wt%. Trace elements (in ppm): Ga 7.89, Ge 3.60, Ir 1.25, As 3.50, Au 0.16. Analyses were carried out at GTK (H. O’Brien, L. Kotomaa).

Classification: Iron (ungrouped). This meteorite was found only 350 m from the Lieksa ungrouped pallasite.

Specimens: 96.5 g main mass and type specimen, LTKM; 30.3 g cut-off piece and 10 g polished section, AAU.
