Northwest Africa 16731 (NWA 16731)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2024 Feb

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL6)

Physical characteristics: A single stone, broken in two parts, partially covered by fusion crust. Cut surface reveals a light grey interior with black clasts to cm in size.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Brecciated chondrite with highly recrystallized clasts, to cm in size, set in a clastic matrix of the same material. The plagioclase in the clasts is euhedral and has average size ~100 µm. Some clasts are shock-darkened by abundant opaque veinlets and the presence of small metal/troiilte composite grains in the silicates. One relict chondrule was observed in the clastic matrix in the studied polished section.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa29.8±0.3 (n=5). Orthopyroxene Fs23.2±0.6Wo2.04±0.23 (n=4). Ca-pyroxene Fs10.9Wo42.6 (n=1). Plagioclase An10.4±0.2Ab88.0±0.4Or1.5±0.2 (n=3).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL6, brecciated)

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Kuntz.
