Northwest Africa 16732 (NWA 16732)

Purchased: 2024 Feb

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3)

Physical characteristics: Multiple fragments without fusion crust. Cut surface reveals a dark interior with large chondrules and CAIs set in an abundant dark matrix.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrite with large chondrules and CAIs to 5 mm set in an abundant fine-grained iron-rich matrix. Opaque minerals are magnetite and iron sulfides (present both in the matrix and in the chondrules).

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa2.59±1.69, range Fa0.69-5.87 (n=7). Low-Ca pyroxene Fs1.01±0.33Wo0.92±0.14 (n=3). Magnetite has 0.6 wt% Cr2O3.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3). Cvox based on the absence of metal.

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE. Main mass with Kuntz.
