Northwest Africa 16759 (NWA 16759)

Purchased: 2022 Jun

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, brecciated)

History: Purchased from a Moroccan mineral dealer at the meteorite show in Ensisheim, France

Petrography: (K. Metzler, IfP) Fine-grained achondritic breccia, consisting of eucritic lithic clasts (up to ~1 cm) with ophitic to subophitic textures, and monomineralic fragments (pyroxene, plagioclase) set in a recrystallized clastic matrix of related debris. Most pyroxenes exhibit augite exsolution lamellae. Accessories are a silica polymorph, ilmenite, troilite, and Fe-Ni metal.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and geochemistry: Low-Ca pyroxene (host): Fs49.9±1.2 Wo3.0±0.3 (Fs47.7-51.5 Wo2.6-3.6); mean Fe/Mn (at.): 33.9; n=12. Ca-rich pyroxene (exsolution lamellae): Fs22.6±0.8Wo40.5±1.0 (Fs21.2-23.8Wo38.8-42.3); n=12. Plagioclase: An87.6±2.8Or0.2±0.2 (An83.7-91.9Or0.0-0.8); n=12.

Classification: Brecciated Eucrite, based on texture, modal composition, and mineral chemistry.
