Northwest Africa 16889 (NWA 16889)

(Northwest Africa)

Find: 2023 Dec

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3)

Physical characteristics: Cut surface reveals large chondrules and CAIs set in an abundant brownish matrix.

Petrography: (J. Gattacceca, CEREGE) Chondrite with large chondrules and CAIs to 5 mm set in a relatively coarse abundant matrix. Opaque minerals are magnetite, and less abundant iron sulfides. No metal was observed.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fa13.3±10.5, range Fa2.1-34.7, NiO 0.16 wt% (n=13). Low-pyroxene Fs0.9Wo3.5 (n=1). Magnetite has 2.83 wt% Cr2O3. Defocused matrix analyses FeO 29.1 wt%, analytical total 84.5 wt%.

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3). CK group based on the Cr2O3 content of magnetite (Torrano et al., 2021)

Specimens: Type specimen at CEREGE, main mass with Kuntz.
