Caleta el Cobre 074 (CeC 074) 24º24.5471’S, 70º17.7353’W Antofagasta, Chile Find: 2018 Nov 18 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L7) History: Dave Kenny found an oriented meteorite in two matching pieces during an Atacama desert meteorite hunting expedition organized by Steve Arnold. The two fusion crusted pieces (1076 and 968 g) were found approximately 3.05 m apart, on November 18, 2018. Physical characteristics: Sample is almost completely covered with a dark brown fusion crust. The cut face shows the interior is orange in color and has a crystalline texture with no visible chondrules and ~6vol% FeNi metal. Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample has a poikiloblastic texture composed of regions of larger mm-sized (n=14) twinned opx crystals surrounded by regions of rounded crystals of fine-grained (15 µm, n=18) olivine, some of which are enclosed in orthopyroxene. Plagioclase occurs as discontinuous networks of irregularly shaped grains surrounding poikilitic pyroxene and olivine. Sample contains ~ 6 vol% FeNi metal and FeS. One region with a may contain a relict olivine chondrule. Additional minerals are: high Ca pyroxene, troilite, chromite, rare ilmenite and apatite. Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) olivine (Fa24.4±0.8, Fe/Mn=46.9±2.3, n=16); low-Ca pyroxene (Fs21.0±0.4Wo3.2±0.6, Fe/Mn=28.2±1.4 n=13); high-Ca pyroxene (Fs11.0-11.9Wo34.0-36.1, Fe/Mn=23.0, n=2). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L7 C-S2 W2) Based on magnetic susceptibility and mineral chemistry, sample is an L chondrite. Discontinuous networks of plagioclase, poikiloblastic texture, equilibrated compositions and low Ca-pyroxene compositions suggest sample is petrologic type 7. Specimens: Dave Kenny holds the main masses. A polished thin section and a sliced chunk weighing 23 g are on deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
