Northwest Africa 17024 (NWA 17024) Algeria Find: 2021 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3) History: Found in 2021 in Hassi Messaoud, Algeria. Purchased by Younes Chaoui in February 2021 from a meteorite dealer in Algeria, then purchased on 3/7/2021 by Chris Monk. Physical characteristics: Many stones with weathered reddish-brown fusion crust. Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is a chondrite comprised of small chondrules (~ 50 vol. %, Av. diameter ~200 µm, primarily PO and POP textures), refractory inclusions (~100 µm, <1 vol. %) and isolated mineral fragments set within a fine-grained matrix (~50 vol. %). Accessory phases include Fe-Ni metal and troilite. Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa26.5±17.5, range Fa0.3-50.0, n=40), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs2.1±0.4Wo1.3±0.8, range Fs1.5-2.9Wo0.8-3.4, n=8). Classification: Carbonaceous Chondrite (CO3). Specimens: 20.7 g and a polished thin section at Cascadia, 52.86 g main mass with Chris Monk. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
