Northwest Africa 17029 (NWA 17029)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2024 Jan

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3)

History: Purchased by Terry Boudreaux in January 2024 from a dealer in Zagora, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS, and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) Well-defined unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 1080 ± 440 µm, N = 26) containing devitrified glass are set in a sparse fine grained matrix containingi kamacite (stained by secondary Fe oxides), taenite, chromite, chlorapatite and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa21.0±9.0, range Fa1.0-39.1, N = 30); Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine 0.01-0.64 wt.%, mean 0.10 wt.%, sd 0.18 wt.%, N = 29), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs10.3±6.8Wo1.2±1.4, range Fs2.4-28.6Wo0.2-4.2, N = 22), subcalcic augite (Fs16.8Wo28.5). Magnetic susceptibility log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 4.74.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3).

Specimens: 25.2 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Boudreaux.
