Writeup from MB 108:

Northwest Africa 12746 (NWA 12746)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2019

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a local meteorite dealer in Erfoud, Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Dark brownish fragment with some fusion crust.

Petrography: Carbonaceous chondrite composed of abundant mostly slightly flattened chondrules with an apparent mean diameter of about 900 μm and 30-40% almost black matrix. Some chondrules are metal-decorated. Olivine and low-Ca pyroxene are the most abundant silicates and olivine is predominantly very Fe-poor (Fo around 98 mol%); few compositionally zoned olivines with more Fe-rich rims are present.

Geochemistry: Matrix analyses yield an average total of 89.4 wt% (5 µm defocused beam, N=10) suggesting the presence of hydrous minerals.
