Wad al Fayda 001 (WaF 001) 24°41.635’N , 12°58.270’W Rio de Oro, Western Sahara Find: 2018 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2) History: Two samples that fit together were found by Lahsen Oussalah in the region between Guelta Zemour and Oum Dreyga (~72 km NE), Western Sahara, in 2018. Jean Redelsperger purchase the samples from Mohamed El Guirah in Zagora in 2020. A third sample weighing 507 g was purchased subsequent to this reporting. Physical characteristics: Samples are dark-brown in color, irregularly shaped, and have a wind-blown exterior. Some chondrules are visible on the surface. The cut face shows abundant metal decorated chondrules in a brown, fine-grained matrix. Petrography: Classification and description (A. Love, App) Sample shows chondritic texture composed of abundant metal-decorated chondrules with igneous rims showing average apparent diameter of 571 µm (n=156) and rare CAIs and AOAs set within a hydrated matrix with abundant framboidal magnetite. Type I chondrules are dominant. Additional minerals are: troilite, rare Ca-armalcolite, trace chromite and phosphates. Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (type I: Fa2.3±1.3, Cr2O3=0.5±0.2, Fe/Mn=38.3±50.0, n=20, type II: Fa19.2±10.5, Fe/Mn=60.0±27.6, n=7), low Ca pyroxene (Fs6.8±8.0Wo1.1±0.9, Fe/Mn=22.4±13.4, n=21). Matrix with low analytical totals (81.0±5.2 Wt%, n=14). Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CR2). Based on presence of metal decorated chondrules, hydrated matrix with abundant framboidal magnetite and rare CAIs, this sample is a CR2. Specimens: Jean Redelsperger holds the main masses.
