Northwest Africa 12392 (NWA 12392)

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased from Rachid Chaoui in Morocco, August 2018.

Physical characteristics: Single stone, lacking fusion crust. Saw cut reveals a mix of brown pyroxene grains and black maskelynite domains and shock melt.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Igneous rock with diabasic texture. The two major phases in this meteorite are pigeonite and maskelynite. The pigeonite has a modal abundance of approximately 75% and shows significant core to rim zoning in backscatter electron images. No augite was detected. Maskelynite has modal abundance of approximately 20%. Ubiquitous ilmenite and ulvöspinel are present. Shock melt veins with vesicles were observed throughout.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Pigeonite Fs53.5±20.3Wo13.7±6.4, core to rim range Fs26.3Wo4.5 Ð Fs76.3Wo16.8, Fe/Mn=36±5, n=13; maskelynite An51.1±2.0Ab48.0±1.8Or0.9±0.6, n=7; Shock melt (20 μm defocused electron beam) SiO2=50.2±2.0, TiO2=0.81±12, Al2O3=10.2±3.7, Cr2O3=0.13±0.05, MgO=6.0±1.9, FeO=19.9±3.9, MnO=0.47±0.10, NiO=0.02±0.03, CaO=9.8±0.4, Na2O=1.6±0.7, K2O=0.10±0.03 (all wt%), n=7.

Classification: Pigeonite basalt, augite absent.

Specimens: 20.1 g including a probe mount on deposit at UNM, Jay Piatek holds the main mass.
