Northwest Africa 14362 (NWA 14362)

Purchased: 2021 Jul

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased by Rachid Chaoui in July 2021 from a dealer in Nouadhibou, Mauritania.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Microgabbroic texture (mean grainsize ~0.8 mm). Composed of bladed grains of pigeonite (exhibiting twinning and limited compositional zoning) and equant grains of olivine (exhibiting minimal zoning) with interstitial maskelynite plus accessory Ti-chromite (with ilmenite exsolution) and pyrrhotite. Some veinlets of secondary calcite are present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa44.1-45.4, FeO/MnO = 55-59, N = 3), pigeonite (Fs26.9-34.0Wo9.3-11.2, FeO/MnO = 26-35, N = 4), maskelynite (An52.5-57.1Or1.0-1.5, N = 3).

Classification: Shergottite (microgabbroic).

Specimens: 12.8 g including one polished thin section at UWB; main mass with WangZ.
