Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14673 (NWA 14673)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: November 2017

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

Physical characteristics: The stone has a granular, sugary texture 60% covered by a fresh fusion crust.

Petrography: R. Hewins, S. Pont, MNHNP. This is a poikilitic shergottite with 50% anhedral olivine (~1 mm ), 26% poikilitic pigeonite (up to 4 mm), 5% chromite (s.l., up to 500 microns), and minor augite. Maskelynite (18%) is generally interstitial though small plagioclase laths were enclosed ophitically by pyroxene. Chromite (up to 400 µm) and Cr-Ti spinel are enclosed by pyroxene and maskelynite. Minor minerals include ilmenite, pyrrhotite and baddelyite. A few shock veins are seen in the hand specimen.

Geochemistry: Mineral compositions and Geochemistry: Olivine is Fo66.0 (SD 0.8) and FeO/MnO 49.9, by coincidence very close to Chassigny olivine in composition. Pigeonite is En63Fs27Wo10 and augite En50Fs17Wo32. Maskelynite is An59-68. The spinels are chromite with composition Chr82-70,Usp2-4 and Cr-Ti spinel with Chr58-34,Usp30-43.

Classification: Martian (shergottite, poikilitic)

Specimens: Specimen: A single stone of 405 g with poikiliitic texture seen in microscope.
