Northwest Africa 14899 (NWA 14899)

Purchased: 13 March 2022

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased on March 13, 2022. by Matthew Stream from Bachir Salek in Algeria.

Physical characteristics: Five stones with slightly weathered fusion crust.

Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample displays a gabbroic texture (Av. silicate grain size ~1.1 mm, up to 5.5 mm, n=105) composed of sub-rounded olivine, prismatic and elongate zoned pyroxene (mostly pigeonite, some displaying augite exsolution lamellae), and elongate plagioclase (completely converted into maskelynite) . Accessory phases include Ti-bearing Cr-rich spinel, ilmenite, merrillite, and troilite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa41.3±1.8, range Fa38.3-44.1, Fe/Mn=51±2, n=12), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs24.6±1.2Wo4.9±0.9, range Fs23.8-25.5Wo4.3-5.5, Fe/Mn=29±1, n=2), Pigeonite (Fs29.8±3.6Wo9.4±2.0, range Fs25.7-34.4Wo6.6-14.6, Fe/Mn=31±2, n=20), High-Ca Pyroxene (Fs22.1±1.1Wo31.2±1.0, range Fs21.3-22.8Wo30.4-31.9, Fe/Mn=26±1, n=2), Plagioclase (An50.4±4.3Or2.0±0.3, range An40.7-53.9Or1.5-2.8, n=18), Cr-rich Spinel (Cr#=83.3±0.8, Mg#=10.2±0.9, TiO2 wt. % = 4.9±3.3, n=3).

Classification: Martian (olivine gabbroic).
