Writeup from MB 111:

Northwest Africa 14904 (NWA 14904)

(Northwest Africa)

Find: 2019

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: Purchased by Adam Aaronson in Temara, Morocco, in 2019

Petrography: Poikilitic Shergotitte with characteristic bimodal texture. Poikilitic areas contain large pyroxene oikocrysts enclosing chadacrysts of olivine. Non-poikilitic areas consist of large anhedral olivine grains, pyroxene, and maskelynite. Accessory phases include merrillite, associated with maskelynite, chromite, ilmenite, and sulfides. Significant evidence of shock is seen: pockets of dark brown shock melt with vesicles and shock veins are prevalent. Olivine microlites are common, as is shock darkening of olivine, and abnormal birefringence colors; areas of shock recrystallized olivine are also present.

Geochemistry: Olivine Fo65.15-69.12Fa30.88-34.85, FeO/MnO=46.49-66.14, (N=62), low-Ca pyroxene Fs19.59-25.24En60.57-77.48Wo2.93-17.85 FeO/MnO=17.68-31.07 (N=34), high Ca-pyroxene Fs13.10-17.05En48.23-54.23Wo30.01-38.20, FeO/MnO=17.68-31.07 (N=51), maskelynite An48.33-54.72Ab43.97-48.99Or0.07-2.92 (N=54)

Classification: Martian (Poikilitic Shergottite)

Specimens: 174.97 g end cut plus 6 one-inch round thin section on deposit at TCU, P. Mani holds the main mass.
