Grove Mountains 021692 (GRV 021692)        72° 46' 26"S,  75° 20' 50"E

Antarctica

Found: 20 January 2003

Classification: Enstatite chondrite

History: X. Qin recovered this stone on the fourth moraine in Grove Mountains, Antarctica. It weighs 0.61 g and has an irregular shape. Part of a black fusion crust remains.

Petrography: (L. Wang, A. Zhang, PMO) The stone contains abundant silicate chondrules and their fragments, up to 0.8 mm in size. Chondrules and their fragments consist of dominant pyroxene with minor olivine, plagioclase, alkaline feldspar, FeNi metal, and troilite. Nearly all metal and sulfide were extensively altered. Some irregular schreibersite, oldhamite, daubréelite, and perryite grains occur in matrix.

Geochemistry: (L. Wang, A. Zhang, PMO) Low-Ca pyroxene (En84.6-99.5, average=En96.7±3.9; Fs0.5-13.6, average=Fs2.4±2.7; Wo0-4.3, average=Wo0.9±1.4) grains contain some Al2O3 (up to 12.5 wt%). Olivine grains are forsteritic (Fa0.4-1.8, average=Fa0.8±0.5).

Classification: Enstatite Chondrite (EC)

Specimens: All of the sample mass and a polished thin section are on deposit at PRIC.
