Writeup from MB 111:

Mdeïné 001        21º54.1452N, 7º27.7062W

Adrar, Mauritania

Purchased: 2021

Classification: Mesosiderite

History: A large number of samples ranging in size from 2-1121 g were found just inside the eastern border of the Adrar region of Mauritania. Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER meteorites) purchased the samples in Mauritania in June 2021.

Physical characteristics: Samples are dark colored and irregularly shaped. The cut face, shows the interior is composed of brecciated silicates and weathered FeNi metal.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is a breccia composed of coarse-grained (avg. grain size=1626 μm, n=9), weakly zoned orthopyroxene clasts, finer-grained polycrystalline lithic fragments and rare impact melt clasts. These components are surrounded by a network of weathering veins and abundant, irregular-shaped, altered metal grains. Olivine shows developed reaction coronas. Pyroxenes in lithic fragments are exsolved. Additional minerals are: silica polymorph, troilite, chromite, phosphates (merrillite and apatite) and rare kamacite and taenite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (Fa31.2-36.1, Fe/Mn=34.2-32.3, n=2); low Ca pyroxene (Fs29.5±4.5Wo3.2±0.9, Fe/Mn=25.2±3.3, n=20); pigeonite (Fs58.3Wo6.4, Fe/Mn=30.8, n=1); high Ca pyroxene (Fs26.3±7.3Wo38.8±1.3, n=3); plagioclase (An94.8±1.8Or0.1±0.1, n=6).

Classification: Mesosiderite. Based on textures and mineral compositions, sample is a mesosiderite.

Specimens: Adrián Contreras Gómez (CRATER meteorites) holds the 1121 g main mass. A polished thin section and 2 individuals weighing 23.62 g are on deposit at App.
