Ramlat Fasad 531 19°00.617’N, 53°18.553’E Zufar, Oman Find: 2018 Jan 23 Classification: Primitive achondrite (Winonaite) History: A single fragment was found during a search for meteorites. Physical characteristics: Dark brown, almost black irregular fragment, 3 × 3 × 2 cm, wind-ablated with protruding veins of Fe-(hydr)oxides, attached sand cemented with Fe-(hydr)oxides. Petrography: (Åke Rosén, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) The sample consists of forsterite, enstatite, diopside, albite and almost completely oxidized iron metal (~30 vol%), with minor chromite, troilite and graphite. Equigranular silicate grains with triple junctions, typical size is 50-150 μm. Unshocked (S1). Almost complete weathering of metal, silicates are unaffected. Geochemistry: (Å. Rosén) Olivine Fa1.51±0.26, molar FeO/MnO 2.8±1.0 (N = 14), enstatite Fs1.57±0.64 (N = 8 ), diopside Fs1.00±0.26Wo48.2±1.7 (N = 23), albite An5.2Or3.7 (n=3). Oxygen isotopes: (R. Greenwood, OU) δ18O = 5.506 δ17O = 2.400 Δ17O = -0.463 (all ‰, sample EATG-cleaned). Classification: Winonaite based on mineral composition, mode and oxygen isotopes, unshocked, strongly weathered. Specimens: 8.46 g and one polished thin section at NMBE. Main mass: MHTO. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
