Northwest Africa 14965 (NWA 14965)

Purchased: 2021 Jan

Classification: Primitive achondrite (Winonaite)

History: Purchased by Darryl Pitt in January 2021 from a dealer in Tindouf, Algeria.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and J. Boesenberg, BrownU) The specimen has a poikiloblastic texture. Larger enstatite oikocrysts (up to 5 mm in size) enclose much smaller grains of forsterite and metal (both kamacite and taenite, ~10 vol.% overall). Other phases present are diopside, sodic plagioclase (as rounded grains), pentlandite, troilite, chlorapatite and rare daubreelite.

Geochemistry: Forsterite (Fa3.1-3.2, FeO/MnO = 15-19, N = 8), enstatite (Fs3.7-4.1Wo1.6-2.0, FeO/MnO = 12-15, N = 4), diopside (Fs1.1-1.2Wo44.8-45.0, FeO/MNO = 9-11, N = 3), plagioclase (Ab74.5-76.2An22.0-20.9Or3.5-2.9, N = 2), kamacite (Ni 6.9-7.2 wt.%, N = 5), taenite (Ni 20.5 wt.%).

Classification: Winonaite.
