Writeup from MB 110:
Northwest Africa 13940 (NWA 13940) Morocco Purchased: 2021 Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite) History: (C. Muñecas, Expometeoritos) A batch consisting of more than 24 pieces of various sizes was found by a nomad in a place in northwest Africa of unknown coordinates. These meteorites were eventually purchased by Carlos Muñecas in Errachidia. Meteorites have different sizes ranging from a few grams to the main mass of 341 g. Physical characteristics: Samples are almost entirely covered by a dark gray, wind-blown, contraction cracked fusion crust. Interior is light gray in color and dark colored clasts occurring in an igneous-textured matrix. Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is a breccia composed of sub-rounded to angular clasts of shock-melted and subophitic-textured lithologies (clasts show sharp boundaries). Subophitic textured clasts are fine-grained (avg. L.D. 285 µm) and are composed of aligned and radiating laths of plagioclase and exsolved pyroxenes. Shock-melted clasts are fine grained and show porphyritic and quench textures with skeletal and soda-straw morphologies. Sample is crosscut by a glassy shock melt vein. Additional minerals are: a silica polymorph, ilmenite, chromite, merrillite and troilite. Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) low Ca pyroxene (Fs60.7±0.3Wo1.7±0.1, Fe/Mn=35.0±0.6, Mg#=38.2±0.4, n=12); pigeonite (Fs50.8Wo14.4, Fe/Mn=33.9, n=1); high Ca pyroxene (Fs29.0±5.1Wo39.7±5.8, Fe/Mn=34.5±1.0, n=12); plagioclase (An79.0±2.1Or2.2±0.8, n=8). Classification: HED achondrite (monomict eucrite breccia M-S3 low weathering). Based on textures and mineral compositions, this sample is an HED breccia dominated by eucrite fragments. Specimens: Carlos Muñecas holds the 341 g main mass. A polished thin section and an endcut and slice weighing 25.18 g are on deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
