Writeup from MB 110:

Northwest Africa 14445 (NWA 14445)

Morocco

Find: 2021

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3)

History: A single stone was purchased from a Moroccan dealer by Sergey Vasiliev in Sept. 2021.

Physical characteristics: The sample has dark brown exterior and is roughly tabular in shape. The cut face shows the interior has chondritic texture composed of abundant dark and light-colored chondrules set within a dark colored matrix.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample contains ellipsoidal chondrules (aspect ratio of 1.55_0.23, n=73) that share a preferred orientation and an avg. (pre-deformed) diameter of 707µm, n=92 set within an opaque, clastic matrix. Many chondrules contain clear isotropic glass. Some chondrules contain relict grains. Additional minerals are: chromite, troilite and rare phosphates.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine Fa15.5±12.2 (Fa0.6-41.0, Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine = 0.08±0.06, n=20, Fe/Mn=47.9±16.4, n=24); low-Ca pyroxene Fs11.9±9.0Wo1.1±1.2 (Fs2.2-26.6Wo0.2-3.9, Fe/Mn=18.5±9.5 n=14).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3, C-S4, W1). Based on textures, abundant glassy mesostasis, diversity of mineral compositions, Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine, CL characteristics, estimated subtype of sample is L3.3.

Specimens: Sergey Vasiliev holds the 566.4 g main mass. A polished thin section and a 26.69 g slice and endcut are on deposit at App.
