Northwest Africa 14704 (NWA 14704)

Purchased: 2019 Nov

Classification: Lunar meteorite (feldspathic breccia)

History: Purchased by Kaiping Wang from a Moroccan dealer at the China Mineral and Gem show in Beijing in November, 2021.

Physical characteristics: A single stone. Nearly half the surface is covered with black fusion crust. The exposed interior shows a light to dark gray breccia in a dark matrix.

Petrography: Petrology (H. Chen, L. Xie, Z. Xia, GUT): It exhibits a breccia texture which is composed of many kinds of clasts set in a fine-grained matrix. Fragmental breccia mainly includes mineral fragments, and impact melt clasts. Most abundant minerals are calcic plagioclase, olivine. Minor phases include ilmenite, chromite troilite and FeNi. The matrix is dominated by glass, as well as few very-fine particles (<10 ?m).

Geochemistry (L. Xie, GUT): Plagioclase: An94.1-97.6Or0-0.21 (n=11); Olivine: Fo66.2-82.9, Fe/Mn=68-102 (n=20); Low-Ca pyroxene: Fs15.0-36.6Wo2.3-11.1, Fe/Mn=45-53 (n=10); High-Ca pyroxene: Fs9.8-31.0Wo36.9-45.5, Fe/Mn=32-59 (n=10).

Classification: Lunar (feldspathic breccia)

Specimens: A polished thin section and about 20 g sample are in deposit at GUT. The owner Kaiping Wang holds the main mass.
