Northwest Africa 14693 (NWA 14693)

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite)

History: Nineteen pieces of matching rocks totaling 210 g were purchased by Steve Arnold from a meteorite broker in Zagora Morocco in November 2021

Physical characteristics: Samples have a light orange-colored exterior and light-colored brecciated interior.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App): Sample is a breccia composed of fine-recrystallized and cumulate-textured lithic clasts (grain size ~1 mm) set within a comminuted host of related mineral debris. Pyroxenes are exsolved and heavily fractured. Additional minerals are: Ilmenite, an Si polymorph.

Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) low Ca pyroxene (Fs50.0±1.1Wo3.8±0.9, Mg#48.0±1.1, Fe/Mn=28.6±1.6, n=12); high Ca pyroxene (Fs22.0±0.8Wo43.2±0.7, Fe/Mn=26.7±0.7, n=12); plagioclase (An93.6±2.2Or0.2±0.1, n=10).

Classification: HED achondrite (eucrite breccia). Based on Fe/Mn ratios of pyroxenes, sample is an HED. Based on Mg# and Fs contents of pyroxenes, lithic clasts and mineral fragments are derived from cumulate eucrites.

Specimens: Steve Arnold holds the main masses. A polished thin section and 2 slices weighing 20.98 g are on deposit at App.
