Northwest Africa 14750 (NWA 14750)


Purchased: 2012

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL3)

History: Sample was purchased at the Tucson mineral show in 2012 from A. Aaronson, who acquired it from Morocco. Sample is catalogued at ROM as M59829.

Physical characteristics: Individual with rusty brown fusion crust on two faces and broken surfaces with well developed desert polish. Chondrules are visible in relief in fusion crust and in broken surfaces. Physical properties: Magnetic susceptibilty of a 87.95 g specimen is log χ (× 10-9 m3/kg) = 3.87.

Petrography: In cut faces, abundant grey well-defined chondrules are set in a dark, rusty brown matrix. Chondrules typically have fine grained rims. Sparse metal is present. In polished thin section, abundant chondrules and chondrule fragments are set in a dark matrix. Chondrules are mostly of types POP, PO and RP and have dark, microcrystalline mesostasis and fine grained rims of matrix material. Olivine exhibits sharp to undulatory extinction. Metal is present in chondrules as small inclusions. Sulfide grains decorate some chondrule rims. In BSE images, olivine and pyroxene grains commonly exhibit zoning.

Geochemistry: EPMA: olivine Fa21.86±11.11 (n=31); Ca-poor pyroxene Fs9.72±7.85, Wo1.43±2.32 (n=25); Ca-rich pyroxene Fs5.64±1.41, Wo40.36±5.19 (n=6). Cr2O3 wt% in ferroan olivine is 0.08±0.08 (n=29).

Classification: Ordinary chondrite: LL3 (S2) W2. Dark matrix lacking recrystallization and olivine compositional variation suggests a petrographic subtype 3.4. Lack of visible metal and magnetic susceptibility suggests LL.
