Northwest Africa 13906 (NWA 13906)

Algeria

Purchased: 2018

Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L4)

History: Purchased in 2019.

Physical characteristics: Twenty identically appearing stones found together, no fusion crust. Saw-cut surface reveals a brecciated chondrite with clasts that have different matrix colors, one being distinctly lighter and the other darker. Numerous, tightly packed, distinct chondrules are present throughout.

Petrography: (C. Agee, UNM) Microprobe examination of a polished mount shows porphyritic chondrules, many with mesostasis or glass. Most secondary plagioclase grains are less than 2 μm in size. Diopsidic pyroxene detected, troilite and Fe,Ni-metal are ubiquitous.

Geochemistry: (C. Agee, UNM) Olivine Fa25.1±2.2, Fe/Mn=49±6, n=8; low-Ca pyroxene Fs19.8±3.4Wo1.7±1.0, Fe/Mn=30±5, n=5.

Classification: Ordinary chondrite L4 (breccia)

Specimens: 21.4 g on deposit at UNM, Matthew Stream holds the main mass.
