Northwest Africa 13507 (NWA 13507)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2020 Jun

Classification: Primitive achondrite (Lodranite)

History: Purchased by Sun-Chung Yang and Juan Chen in June 2020 from an Algerian dealer.

Petrography: (A. Irving, UWS and P. Carpenter, WUSL) Breccia composed of some lithic clasts with protogranular texture (grainsize up to 4 mm) plus related disaggregated crystalline debris in a very sparse fine grained matrix. Major minerals are olivine, low-Ca pyroxene (exhibiting polysynthetic twinning) and augite, accompanied by accessory Fe metal (partially altered to chlorine-bearing hydroxides), Cr-bearing troilite and small grains of schreibersite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa9.1-12.3, FeO/MnO = 16-23, N = 5), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs10.5-10.7Wo4.7-4.8, FeO/MnO = 13-14, N = 5), augite (Fs6.2-6.4Wo37.2-37.7, FeO/MnO = 10-11, N = 4).

Classification: Lodranite (breccia).

Specimens: 29.4 g including one polished thin section at UWB; remainder with Mr. S.-C. Yang and Mr. J. Chen.
