Ramlat Fasad 529 18°57.644’N, 53°15.524’E Zufar, Oman Find: 2018 Jan 23 Classification: Primitive achondrite (Acapulcoite) History: A single individual was found during a search for meteorites. Physical characteristics: Dark brown, rusty stone, rounded Petrography: (J. Pape, E. Gnos, B. Hofmann) The sample consists dominantly of olivine, orthopyroxene, Ca-rich clinopyroxene and plagioclase. Mostly oxidized Fe-Ni-metal (~10 vol%) and partly altered troilite (~5 vol%). Chromite and graphite are minor constituents. Equigranular texture with a typical grain size of 0.2-0.4 mm with abundant triple junctions among silicates. Veins are filled with weathering products. Unshocked (S1). Weathering is strong (equivalent to W3). Geochemistry: (J. Pape) Olivine Fa9.4±0.3, FeO/MnO=17±1 (N=8), orthopyroxene Fs9.1±0.2Wo1.9±0.3, FeO/MnO=11±1 (N = 7), Ca-pyroxene Fs4.3±0.4Wo45.1±1.8, Cr2O3 1.41±0.11 wt%, FeO/MnO=8±1 (N = 11), plagioclase An18.1±0.8, Or3.9±0.3 (N = 11). Homogeneous mineral compositions. Classification: Based on texture and mineral composition this meteorite is classified as acapulcoite, unshocked, strongly weathered. Specimens: 32.49 g, mineral separates, and one polished thin section at NMBE. Main mass: MHTO. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
