Northwest Africa 14642 (NWA 14642)

Lodranite, (Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021 Nov

Classification: Primitive achondrite (Lodranite)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a group of meteorite hunters in Nouadhibou, Mauritania in November, 2021.

Physical characteristics: Small grayish-greenish fragment with minor fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia composed of up to 5 mm sized mineral clasts with abundant fine-grained cataclastic zones of related material. Predominant minerals are augite, partly exsolved orthopyroxene, and olivine. Augite contains some orthopyroxene-chromite symplectites. Minor phases include chromite, FeS, and kamacite. No feldspar was found in the section studied.

Geochemistry: Ca pyroxene: Fs4.3±0.1Wo43.4±0.5 (Fs4.1-4.5Wo42.6-44.0, FeO/MnO=12±2, n=7); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs9.6±0.2Wo2.1±0.4 (Fs9.4-9.9Wo1.3-2.5, FeO/MnO=18±1, n=7); olivine: Fa10.5±0.2 (Fa10.4-10.7, FeO/MnO=32±2, n=7)
