Northwest Africa 14060 (NWA 14060) (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2021 Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CK3) History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Algeria. Physical characteristics: Dark brownish rock without fusion crust. Petrography: The meteorite displays a dark brownish to reddish interior and is composed of well formed separated chondrules (apparent mean diameter about 800 µm) in a matrix dominated by Ni-bearing ferroan olivine. The meteorite contains up to 1 cm sized whitish CAIs. Olivines in chondrules often show strong compositional zoning with Mg-rich cores and FeO-rich rims. Minor phases include intermediate plagioclase, pigeonite, augite, diopside, fassaite, troilite, and pentlandite; metal was not detected. Cr-bearing magnetite is abundant. The meteorite is strongly altered and contains secondary calcite and barite. Geochemistry: olivine: Fa26.2±9.8 (Fa0.4-31.7, FeO/MnO=101±28; NiO=0.30±0.12 wt%, n=44); pigeonite: Fs1.3±0.1Wo8.4±1.1 (Fs1.3-1.5Wo7.3-10.3, n=11) augite: Fs1.5±0.1Wo37.0±2.4 (Fs1.3-1.8Wo34.5-41.8, n=10); diopside: Fs7.4±0.8Wo48.3±1.0 (Fs5.8-8.6Wo46.4-49.5, n=8); feldspar: An9.8-23.6Ab73.3-85.8Or2.9-5.3, n=11; magnetite contains 3.7±0.1 wt% Cr2O3, n=4 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
