Northwest Africa 1618 (NWA 1618)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2002

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3)

History: Purchased by Nelson Oakes in 2002 from a dealer in Agadir, Morocco.

Petrography: (A. Irving and S. Kuehner, UWS) Small, well-formed chondrules (apparent diameter 200±150 μm), AOA, CAI and zoned mineral fragments are set in a fine grained, black matrix (~40 vol.%) containing minor secondary calcite.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa1.2-70.3, Cr2O3 in ferroan examples 0.20-0.60 wt.%, mean 0.41±0.14 wt.%, N = 8), orthopyroxene (Fs1.1-1.2Wo0.9-1.1, N = 2), clinopyroxene (Fs1.2Wo35.5; Fs0.7Wo46.9; N = 2).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CO3).

Specimens: 4.1 g including one polished thin section at PSF; 8.6 g at UCLA; remainder with Oakes.
